Equipment Policy
At Northern Lakes Youth Hockey Association (NLYHA), player safety is our top priority. All players are required to wear proper protective equipment during all games and practices. Equipment must meet the standards set by District 15 of Minnesota Hockey, and be appropriate for each player’s position.
Required Player Equipment
All skaters must have the following equipment:
- Proper-fitting ice skates
- Neck Guard
- Stick
- Breezers
- Certified helmet with attached faceguard
- Mouthguard (attached to helmet)
- Supporter with cup or pelvic protector
- Shin pads
- Shoulder pads
- Elbow pads
- Hockey gloves
Note: Players at the Squirt/10U level and above are required to wear:
- Black helmets
- Black breezers
- Black/red gloves
Required Goalie Equipment
All goalies must have:
- Athletic cup or pelvic protector
- Breezers
- Goalie skates
- Leg pads
- Chest and arm protector
- Certified helmet with mouthguard and neck protector
- Glove and blocker
- Goalie stick
Uniforms
Uniforms are distributed at the beginning of the season, as determined by the Equipment Manager. All teams must wear the approved NLYHA uniform. Any exceptions require board approval.
Equipment Provided by NLYHA
To support new and returning families, NLYHA provides essential equipment to help reduce barriers to participation. This equipment is included with registration for Mini-Mites, Mites, Squirts, 8U, and 10U skaters.
Provided for Skaters:
- Skates
- Helmet
- Neck Guard
- Shoulder pads
- Elbow pads
- Knee pads
- Breezers
- Hockey gloves
- Hockey bag
Not provided:
- Hockey stick
- Athletic cup/pelvic protector
- Mouthguard
Provided for Goalies (Mites through Bantams):
To support goalie development across all levels, NLYHA provides additional goalie-specific gear.
- Socks
- Breezers
- Goalie skates
- Leg pads
- Chest/arm protector
- Helmet and neck protector
- Glove and blocker
Not provided:
- Goalie stick
- Athletic cup/pelvic protector
- Mouthguard
Equipment Use & Responsibility
All equipment and uniforms provided by NLYHA remain the property of the association. Families are financially responsible for any lost or stolen gear.
Much of the equipment may be gently used and subject to availability. If a player or parent believes a piece of equipment is unsafe or unfit, please notify the Equipment Director or ask a coach for help. The Equipment Director will determine whether the item should be repaired or replaced. If no issue is found, families may purchase replacement gear at their discretion.
