Shane Buntje Scholarship

The Northern Lakes Youth Hockey Association (NLYHA) has always believed that hockey is about more than what happens on the ice. Since 2012, the Association has focused on helping young athletes build skills, character, and values that carry into life beyond the rink.

In partnership with Shane Buntje’s friends and family, NLYHA is proud to offer the Shane Buntje Memorial Scholarship. Established in Shane’s memory after his passing in 2017, the scholarship honors his passion for hockey, coaching, and mentoring young players. Shane believed that hockey teaches leadership, confidence, teamwork, and resilience—qualities that help athletes succeed long after their playing days are over.

Scholarship Overview

The Shane Buntje Memorial Scholarship provides financial assistance to NLYHA alumni pursuing post-secondary education.

• Award: $750
• Recipients: One male and one female athlete
• Eligibility:
• Participation in NLYHA for at least two years
• Submission of a brief essay on what hockey has meant to the applicant
• Academic transcript
• First-semester college report card showing a minimum “C” average (required for payment)

All applications are reviewed and selected by the Buntje family in conjunction with the NLYHA Board.
